Thomas S. Sayles

On April 1, 2007, Thomas S. Sayles joined Rentech, Inc as Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Corporate Communications. Rentech is an alternative fuels company headquartered in the Westwood area of Los Angeles. The company currently produces fertilizer, which is used by farmers in connection with the production of corn, much of which is used to produce ethanol. The company also plans to produce ultra clean diesel, jet fuel and chemicals using its proprietary Rentech process.

From 1998 to March of 2007, Mr. Sayles served as Vice President of Federal and State Affairs for Sempra Energy. His responsibilities included legislative policy, planning and analysis and local, state and federal government relations. In 1994, Mr. Sayles joined the Southern California Gas Company (one of Sempra's predecessor companies)

as Vice President of Public Affairs. In 1997, he served as Senior Vice President, Consumer Marketing, for Energy Pacific, another subsidiary of Sempra's predecessor companies.

Prior to joining the Southern California Gas Company, Mr. Sayles was Secretary of the California Business Transportation and Housing Agency ("BT&HV). BT&H oversees 13 state departments, including the Department of Transportation ("Caltrans"), and numerous other boards and commissions. During his tenure, BT&H had more than 40,000 employees and a budget in excess of $7 billion.

Prior to becoming BT&H Secretary, Mr. Sayles served as the California Commissioner of Corporations. During his tenure as Commissioner of Corporations, Mr. Sayles was responsible for regulating the sale of securities in California, Health Maintenance Organizations ("HMOs") and numerous financial institutions.

Mr. Sayles also practiced law for fifteen years in the private and public sector. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Unified Western Grocers, a buying cooperative for independent grocers in the western United States. He previously served as a member of the Board of Directors of Golden State Bancorp ("Cal Fed Bank"). He also served a twelve-year term as a member of the University of California Board of Regents and a four-year term as a member of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.

Mr. Sayles graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University in 1972. He earned his law degree from Harvard University's School in 1975. He also attended the UCLA Executive Management Program.
